High-tech & robots to fix Europe’s roads

Description

Europe’s ageing road network, much of it built after the Second World War, is facing extensive maintenance needs. Increasing traffic and frequent roadworks cause delays, risks for road workers and challenges for authorities looking for efficient solutions.

The EU-funded OMICRON project offers innovations like a modular robotic platform for tasks such as installing barriers, sealing cracks and removing road paint, all remotely controlled via augmented and virtual reality to improve safety. Drones and advanced digital tools enable fast, detailed inspections, reducing disruption and enabling smarter maintenance.

These technologies are set to transform road maintenance across Europe.

The Omicron project is running until January 2025.
